Splitting carpool costs fairly

Rotate drivers, or pay the driver a share of the real costs.

4 min read

The simplest carpools rotate drivers so costs even out. When one person always drives, riders usually chip in toward gas, parking and wear.

Options

  • Rotate drivers equally
  • Riders pay a share of gas, parking and tolls
  • Add a per-mile amount for wear and maintenance

Insurance

Sharing costs is generally treated differently from charging for rides. If you collect more than the costs, it may affect your insurance. Ask your insurer.
